Information for Prospective Students and Postdocs

  • Internships (and other inquiries):   Because of the substantial administrative burdens, I am regrettably not currently considering internships with high school students or undergraduates that are not enrolled at Harvard University or participating in the various formal programs supported at the CfA (these include SRMP, the SAO REU, CREATE, and the SAO-Southampton Masters Program). If you are interested in such programs, please contact me well in advance (at least 1 month before their respective deadlines). I cannot review or offer advice on your applications. I cannot support unpaid or remote internships. Harvard undergraduate students: I am happy to discuss opportunities for research projects as part of Ay98, Ay99, or other independent research.

  • Prospective Graduate Students:   If you are interested in doing doctoral research in my group, please review the application pages for the Harvard PhD program in astronomy. Our admissions decisions are not predicated on direct hires by advisors (i.e., be aware that I do not decide if you are admitted to the program). However, it might be useful to reach out in advance of the deadline to indicate your interest. I receive many inquiries each year, so usually I am not available for long discussions — that said, I can answer quick questions via email (including if there are openings expected for new students). I encourage you to reach out to current students in the group (or recent alumni) if you want to learn about their experiences. Once you are admitted, we can discuss some research ideas in more detail.

If you are enrolled in a PhD program and are interested in spending time (> 6 months) doing some of your dissertation research with our group at the CfA, the SAO pre-doctoral fellowship program may be of interest. Please reach out well in advance of the deadline to discuss this option.

  • Prospective Postdoctoral Fellows:   I welcome appropriate inquiries about postdoctoral positions with the group. If a funded position is available, a link to a job advertisement will appear on my home page. Otherwise, there are a number of opportunities for prize fellowships in residence at the CfA, including the CfA and Clay Fellowships, the ITC Fellowship, the National Hubble Fellowship Program, the 51 Pegasi b Fellowship, the NSF AAPF, and the Future Faculty Leaders Fellowship (among others). In all cases, it pays to indicate your interest early (i.e., by late summer). I can offer some general advice on applications and strategies, but usually am unable to provide detailed guidance unless we have collaborated closely. If you would like to visit the group to see if it would be a good fit, please consult the visitors page.
