Science Focus: New Facilities
 
GMT Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT)
Scheduled for completion around 2016, the GMT will produce images up to 10 times sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope. Advanced instrumentation will detect Earth-like planets around nearby stars and newly-formed galaxies at the edge of the observable Universe.
Galaxies icon Murchison Wide-Field Array (MWA)
A proposed H I imaging array for high redshift 21 cm observations, the MWA will examine the structure of the early universe shortly after the formation of the first stars. All-sky observations with MWA may tell us how galaxies and other large structures form.
 PanStarrs icon Pan-STARRS and LSST
Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) is an innovative design for a wide-field imaging facility being developed at the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is a proposed ground-based 8.4-meter, 10 square-degree-field telescope that will provide digital imaging of faint astronomical objects across the entire sky, night after night.
