The Line Emission Mapper (LEM) Probe team will hold a science and technology workshop between February 28 – March 3 at the Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The workshop will present the current broad science case and the state of the underlying detector and mirror technology, in preparation for the 2023 NASA Astrophysics Probes call.

LEM's primary goal is a comprehensive look at the physics of galaxy formation, including the stellar and black-hole feedback and flows of baryonic matter into and out of galaxies, which are best studied in X-rays. LEM will use a large microcalorimeter array/IFU, covering a 30' field with 15" resolution, to map the soft X-ray line emission from objects that constitute a galactic ecosystem — SNRs, star-forming regions, superbubbles, Fermi/eROSITA bubbles in the Milky Way and their analogs in other galaxies, Circumgalactic Medium, and the Intergalactic Medium beyond the confines of galaxies and clusters. Its 1–2 eV spectral resolution and the 0.2–2 keV band will make it possible to disentangle the faint signal from the Milky Way foreground, measure gas velocities and diagnose various emission mechanisms and plasma conditions. LEM will observe all classes of astrophysical objects. The team is considering a shallow all-sky survey and observations of Earth's magnetosphere.
