This directory holds a set of plots and animations.
butterfly-diagram.pdf butterfly diagram (and sunspot number) built from KPVT, MDI and HMI
synoptic magnetic observations, binned to a 36-day long sampling.
bd+ts-sgk.pdf comparison of the butterfly diagram to the so-called torsional
oscillations (residual rotation rate), at the solar surface,
inferred from frequencies resulting from SGK's fitting, using either
GONG or MDI+HMI observations (36-day long time series)
bd+ts-proj.pdf similar comparison, but with inferences from frequencies resulting
from the respective project data analysis pipelines (NSO or SU),
using GONG or MDI+HMI observations.
The directory romg/ holds animations of the residual rotation rate, shown as a
function of time, latitude and depth. The residual rotation is defined as the
rotation minus the mean rotation for Cycle 23 (i.e., the 4608 days --
64 x 72 days, or 12.62 yrs -- spanning 1996.05.01 to 2008.12.11.)
The scaling is +/- 2.5 nHz (2.5 nHz = 2.1 degree per Carrington rotation, or
2.8 degree per 36 days).
The directory twist/ hold animations of the evolution of the twist of a
pole-to-pole line by the changing residual rotation rate, shown at several
depths. A butterfly diagram (the symmetrized mean of the absolute value of the
magnetic field) is wrapped on the rotating sphere.
The different cases are:
gong-sgk-036d.mp4 inversion of SGK's frequencies, using GONG observations (l=1,200),
fitting used 36-day long time series, one every 36 days, asymmetric profiles
gong-sgk-072d.mp4 72-day 72 days
gong-sgk-144d.mp4 144 72
gong-sgk-288d.mp4 288 144
mdi+hmi-sgk-036d.mp4 inversion of SGK's frequencies, using MDI followed by HMI observations (l=1,300),
fitting used 36-day long time series, one every 36 days, asymmetric profiles
mdi+hmi-sgk-072d.mp4 72-day 72 days
mdi+hmi-sgk-144d.mp4 144-day 72 days
gong-proj-108d.mp4 inversion of NSO's (GONG project) frequencies, using GONG observations (l=1,200),
fitting used 108-day long time series, one every 36 days and symmetric profiles
mdi+hmi-proj.sym-072d.mp4 inversion of Stanford's (MDI/HMI project) frequencies, using MDI followed by HMI observations (l=1,300),
fitting used 72-day long time series, one every 36 days and symmetric profiles
mdi-proj.asym-072d.mp4 inversion of Stanford's (MDI/HMI project) frequencies, using MDI observations (l=1,300),
fitting used 72-day long time series, one every 36 days and asymmetric profiles
All the rotation inversions were carried out using Antonio Eff-Darwich latest code.
Note: these results correspond to VERSION=0 of HMI spherical harmonic
coeficients.
