UVCS Status 21 February 1996

Star observations

Observations of the star Aquarius 38 have been carried out with the two UV channels. The observations will also be used for in-flight calibration of the instrument.

All the mechanisms have been successfully commissioned.

Preliminary observations of the solar corana have been carried out with all three channels. High resolution spectral profiles of the coronal Lyman alpha line and of the OVI doublet have been obtained at different heights above the solar east limb and north pole. The excellent quality of the data indicates that the performances of the optics and the detectors are nominal.

The firsty images of a streamer on the east limb and of plumes on the north pole have been obtained from intensity maps of the Lyman alpha and OVI lines.

!!! First light of the UVCS LYA Channel !!!

The first spectra of the extended corona above the east limb of the sun at the heliocentric height of 3 solar radii have been obtained with the UVCS LYA channel.

!!! First light of the UVCS OVI Channel !!!

The first spectra of the extended corona above the east limb of the sun at the heliocentric height of 3 solar radii have been obtained with the UVCS OVI channel.

The following spectral lines were observed: H-Lyman alpha and beta, and the OVI doublet (1032/1037 Ang.).

UVCS Status 22 January 1996

Further observations of the polarized brightness of the K-corona have been carried out. The instrument has been offset for observations above the east limb of the sun at the heliocentric height of 3 solar radii.

Preliminary tests on the level of visible stray light in the instrument have been performed by moving the internal occulter to different positions. The preliminary analysis of these tests indicate that the instrument stray light rejection properties are consistent with those measured during the ground tests at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.

UVCS Status 15 January 1996

!!! First light of the UVCS Visible Light Channel (VLC) !!!

The UVCS/VLC has been successfully operated for the first time. Measurements have been performed of the polarized brightness of the K-corona above the east limb of the sun at the heliocentric height of 2.5 solar radii.

The UVCS sun sensors have been successfully commissioned.

The UVCS aperture door has been completely opened.

UVCS Status 03 January 1996

The launch locks on the telescope mirrors, internal occulter, Ly-alpha grating, and OVI grating were released without any problems whatsoever.

ALL UVCS LAUNCH LOCK HAVE NOW BEEN RELEASED. These same mechanisms were then powered and exercised through large fractions of their ranges: they function as expected and are considered "commissioned" at this time.

In addition, the polarizer mechanism in the UVCS Visible Light Channel was exercised and successfully passed its commissioning.

Finally, the OVI Neutral Density Filter was operated, and found to be functioning normally.

UVCS Status 22 December 1995

All Instrument temperatures are within the safe nonoperational and operational ranges.

Three mechanisms and their associated launch locks have been commissioned. They are the aperture door, the roll mechanism and the pointing mechanism. All are behaving nominally except for anomolous readings for both the primary and redundant position sensors on one of the pointing stages.

The aperture door is partially open for the purpose of vacuum pumping. The output of the UVCS sun-sensor photodiodes is consistent with expectations for the current aperture door configuration.

Both the primary and redundant instrument controllers have been commissioned and appear to operate normally.
