Density is Destiny: The Role of Environment
in Building Red-and-Dead Galaxies at z~0.8
Shannon Patel (UCSC)

We studied galaxy colors and star formation rates (SFRs) over a broad range of environments at z~0.8 in order to identify the locations where the red-sequence is built up and star formation is shut down at this dynamic epoch. Our results point to intermediate density environments, which trace the dense regions of the field and groups, as key transition regions. These environments also contribute significantly to the growth in the number of quiescent galaxies in clusters. In order to construct our sample, we utilized low-resolution spectroscopy with a prism in IMACS at Magellan. I will discuss this novel observing strategy which forms the basis for some of the largest redshift surveys to date.
