Needle in the Haystack:
Search for Transiting Planets with HATNet

Dr. Gaspar Bakos (CfA)

The HATNet project at CfA is performing wide-angle, high-precision photometric monitoring of the sky with two goals in mind: to search for extrasolar planetary transits and to characterize general stellar variability. I will briefly touch upon the history of the project, and tell how we started with a single telescope, and built up the two-site Arizona--Hawaii network of seven instruments. Next, I will summarize the operations and our experience of the past three years, and talk about the current status of the instruments. I will describe our methodology of search for planetary transits, from observations through light-curve analysis to spectroscopy. I will list a few auxiliary science projects that are related to HAT.
