The ESSENCE project is a 5-year survey to constrain the dark energy
equation-of-state parameter, w, to 10% by discovering and studying
200 Type Ia supernovae from 0.2 < z < 0.8. By setting a new standard
in quantifying and controlling the systematic uncertainties that can
afflict precision supernova cosmology, we are addressing the
fundamental question facing cosmology today: is dark energy
consistent with a simple cosmological constant or is it something
else entirely? In this talk I will present the cosmological
constraints from the first three years of data from the ESSENCE
survey. I will conclude with prognostications about the future of
supernova cosmology.
