GMT in Our Backyard

Dr. Rosanne di Stefano (CfA)

The image quality and collecting area of the Giant Magellan Telescope will permit us to carry out new types of astronomical investigations. The MyGMT series has already included talks on applications to cosmology and to planet detection. I will therefore take the opportunity to explore how the GMT will influence the course of research on a variety of other areas, especially high energy astrophysics, binaries, and microlensing. With a brief foray into the solar system, the average distance of the objects I will discuss will be well within 10 megaparsecs, our astronomical backyard.
