VERITAS and the TeV Sky

Dr. Trevor Weekes (F. L. Whipple Observatory)

Recent visitors to the Whipple Observatory will have noted some changes to the appearance and function of the Whipple Basecamp in recent months. The installation of four VERITAS 12m telescopes, which was completed this summer, has temporarily transformed the site into an active gamma-ray observatory. The circumstances leading to this change of plan for VERITAS will be described as well as the future prospects. This array will become operational at the end of the year and in two years of operation at this temporary location will hopefully do for the northern hemisphere what the HESS experiment has done for the south. The high points of the latter will be described as well as the scientific program for VERITAS; in particular the key science projects that have been identified for VERITAS will be discussed.
