Formation of Elliptical Galaxies

Dr. Andreas Burkert (University of Munich)

The origin of elliptical galaxies is analysed. It is shown that major mergers of early- and late-type galaxies can explain many observed global properties of ellipticals. The fine structure of ellipticals provides valuable information on the morphologies, gas contents and evolutionary stages of their progenitors, by this leading to additional important constraints on cosmological structure formation and galaxy formation.
