The Stellar Content of the Hamburg/ESO Objective Prism Survey
Norbert Christlieb, Hamburger Sternwarte, Germany
Abstract
The Hamburg/ESO objective prism survey is a
wide-angle (10,000 square degrees), digital survey
at high galactic lattitudes (|b| > 30 deg), which
is mainly aimed at finding bright (12.0 < B_J < 17.5)
quasars. Our data-base of several million digital,
low-resolution (15 A at H-gamma) spectra
allows not only a very efficient and automatic
selection of quasar candidates, but enables us also to
exploit its stellar content systematically, e.g.
carbon stars, very metal-poor stars, hot and cool
white dwars, cataclysmic variables, and many more.
In my talk I will give an overview of the stellar
projects carried out in the course of the survey,
and I will discuss the various candidate selection
techniques which are involved; e.g. automatic
classification, selection in multi-dimensional
parameter space based on emission or absorption
line detections, or "simple" colour selection.
