Cloth Face Covering

CDC advises use of cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus, as they can reduce the release of infectious particles into the air when someone speaks, coughs, or sneezes. Coverings should be made of tightly woven cotton and worn to cover the mouth and nose. A cloth face covering can be a sewn mask secured with ties or straps around the head or behind the ears or a folded cloth using rubber or hair bands to secure behind the ears (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth...)

When to use: There are several instances when a face covering should be worn:

  • When you are able to maintain appropriate distances, but still wish to wear a face covering, you may wear at your discretion.
  • When working with other asymptomatic persons or during incidental contact to decrease droplet spread
  • To prevent dust or debris from entering the mouth or nose (e,g., horticulture work, dusty environments)
  • Cloth face coverings can be tied over a face mask or N-95 respirator to protect it from dirt and/or fluids to extend its life.

When to reuse: Cloth face coverings should be washed in warm water with detergent and dried on medium to high heat after every use. They may be reused for as long as they last.

Whenever you are able to maintain appropriate social/physical distances, please do so. Actively look for opportunities to follow social distancing guidelines. Practicing social distancing saves PPE for those who need it.
