Past Schedule of WIS-Chats
Wednesday, September 10, 2014, Meeting Room B105, 4:15 pm:
Eva Grebel , Professor of Astronomy at Heidelberg (Germany) University, and
Director, Astronomical Computing Center. She is delivering the
Raymond and Beverly Sackler Distinguished Lecture in Astronomy on Sept. 11:
Dwarf Galaxies and their Role as Building Blocks.
Monday, February 10, 2014, Pratt Conference Room, 3:15 pm:
Charles Alcock , Director, Center for Astrophysics
This time, we will meet with one of our own. This talk is somewhat of
a "first", because we've exclusively had female scientists as WIS-Chat
guests so far. Feel free to bring any kind of questions related to
job profile, career path, personal insights... Tea and snacks provided!
If you have strong feelings about having female vs. female and
male guests at the WIS-Chat, please let me know. This WIS-Chat
is sort of an experiment; I think that our director can give
some valuable insights that most of us postdocs and grad
students don't have easy access to, and therefore I chose
to deviate from the usually exclusively female line-up.
Wednesday, January 22, 2014, ClassRoom (A101), 2:30 pm:
Kim McLeod , Professor of Astronomy, Wellesley College. Wellesley
is a women's liberal arts college, and Kim's undergraduate
research students work on observational projects like the
KELT exoplanet network. At the moment, she is
spending her research sabbatical here at the CfA.
Thursday, September 19, 2012, Tea Room, 11:00 am:
Heather Knutson , Assistant Professor of Planetary Science,
Caltech.
Heather
earned her Ph.D. from Harvard in 2009, and will
be sharing her experiences in her job search.
Thursday, March 1, 2012, Classroom, 5:15 pm:
Kathryn Johnston , Associate Professor, Columbia
University. Kathryn
earned her Ph.D. at University of California Santa Cruz,
completed a post-doc at the Institute for Advanced Study,
then then joined the faculty at Wesleyan University where she
was awarded an NSF Career Grant. She uses both observations
and simulations to investigate how galaxies, especially our
Local Group form. At the chat she will also discuss some
statistics of Women in Science and Engineering. Cookies
will be provided.
Thursday, February 8, 2012, Tearoom, 10:00 am:
Lynne Hillenbrand, Professor, Caltech. Her research focuses on
star and planet formation, stellar astrophysics, and observational
data analysis from X-ray to millimeter wavelengths. Besides mentoring
20 undergrads, 11 grad students, and 10 post-docs, she has taken an
active role in the astronomical community and has served on a number
of national advisory and steering committees with a large range of
acronyms including the AAAC, NRC, NASA, NSF, AAS, and IAU. The
Chat will be shorter and earlier than usual due to the typically
crowded schedule on Thursday. Some sort of
morning-appropriate food will be provided.
Wednesday, November 30, 2011, Classroom, 4:00 pm:
Beth Willman , Assistant Professor, Haverford College. Beth
received her PhD at the University of Washington and was
a Clay Fellow here at the CfA. Beth works on near-field
cosmology and has a dwarf galaxy named after her (Willman 1).
Cupcakes will be provided!!
Monday, October 31, 2011, Classroom, 3:30 pm:
Nancy Evans , Smithsonian Scientist. A non-spooky WIS Chat this
afternoon. Nancy was an undergraduate at Wellesley College and
completed her Ph.D. at the University of Toronto. She has since
dedicated many years to studying Cepheids and also serving as science
staff of IUE and Chandra. Cupcakes will be provided!!
Monday, September 19, 2011, Classroom, 3:00 pm:
Lisa Kewley , Professor at the Insitute for Astronomy at
the University of Hawaii. Her research interests include
galaxy evolution, star formation, AGN and ULIRGs. She has received
both the AAS Newton Lacy Pierce Prize and the Annie Jump Cannon
Award. Cookies or some other dessert will be provided.
Tuesday, February 1, 2011, Classroom, 3:30 pm:
Lisa Kaltenegger , Scientist and Group Leader at MPIA in Heidelberg.
Lisa finished a postdoc at the CfA in 2009 and now splits
her time between MPIA in Heidelberg and Harvard. She works
on characterizing exo-planets and exo-moons.
Thursday, November 4, 2010, Pratt, 9:45 am:
Sara Seager , Ellen Swallow Richards Professor of
Planetary Science and a Professor of Physics at MIT.
She works on modeling exoplanet atmospheres and interiors.
Tuesday, October 12, 2010, Classroom - A101, 1:30 pm:
Christine Jones-Forman, Senior Physicist, SAO. Christine
works on X-ray observations of
galaxies here at the CfA. In 2009 she was awarded the
Marcel Grossman Award for her pioneering work in
X-ray imaging of galaxy clusters.
Monday, April 26, 2010, Classroom - A101, 2:00 pm:
Debra Fischer , Professor of Astronomy at Yale and
on sabbatical here in Cambridge as a Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute.
Debra is the Principal Investigator of several programs
searching for exoplanets, including the Lick Planet Search,
N2K, M2K and CTIO programs.
Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, Classroom - A101, 4:00 pm:
